A prediction on John G. Roberts, updated

Several months ago, I made a prediction on the occasion of John G. Roberts' nomination to the Supreme Court. That was before Roberts was named Chief Justice, and before Alito's nomination to the Court. Needless to say, I stand by my prediction.

So maybe what we should do is start a pool: which state'll be first to outlaw abortion?

My gut tells me Kansas, because I just saw Brancaccio interviewing the head of Kansans for Life. There's also Kansas' strong commitment to strong instruction in science.

But some of y'all may favor Alabama, or South Carolina. So whaddy'all think?

Alabama effectively already has no access to abortion within the state. That may not be the only state to have a de facto ban on abortion, but I doubt it. My guess it the legislation to out law it is already written and ready for introduction in several state capitals.

Which is great new. In all seriousness, let's hope that Alito gets confirmed, and that the Alabama, Kansas, or other virulently anti-abortion legilatures actually do ban abortion outright. Doubly, let's hope the case comes before the court soon and is decided BEFORE the Nov. '06 elections. And, triply, hope that Roberts and Alito both write for the majority, overturning not just the right to abortion, but all other rights to privacy.

And then, let the voting commence. Legalized abortion will destroy the tenuous Republican coalition in one to two election cycles. Goodbye soccer moms, goodbye moderates, goodbye parents of teenage girls from here to the north and, yes, even the southern borders.

Outlaw abortion? BRING IT ON!

The RNC may find truth in the Capote epigram I recently heard: "More tears are shed over unanswered prayers than over answered ones."

OK, it's late. That should have read "More prayers are shed over ANSWERED prayers than unanswered ones."
